Jim McCarthy teaches broadcast journalism, photography, and yearbook at Joseph A. Gregori High School in Modesto, CA. McCarthy was named the 2020 Broadcast Adviser of the Year by the Journalism Education Association. He advises JNN, a nationally recognized broadcast program. McCarthy presents at the JEA/NSPA National Journalism Conventions, teaches video journalism at the Gloria Shields Journalism Workshop, and presents at the Asilomar Language Arts Conference.
 McCarthy has taught English and journalism at McKinleyville High, Bergen Yrkesskole (Bergen, Norway), and Grace Davis High, where he advised yearbook and the nationally award winning newspaper The Corinthian.
